As promised i would like to share some very interesting information
regarding the drum company D.W. otherwise known as Drum Workshop with
you all.
When we started Drum Workshop, we shared a dream to make exquisite instruments by hand. Now, i feel so fortunate to be surrounded by extraordinary men and women that make that dream a reality every day.
This quote came from John Good, Executive Vice President and Drum Designer, Drum Workshop, Inc.
Wood hunts are adventures. They take us on long journeys where the
airplane get smaller and smaller. When we eventually get there, we find
ourselves in mud- soaked pick up trucks on roads that have no names.
The roads become paths into the forest --- and that's where the deals
are made.
After harvest, logs are gathered onto a truck for transport to the mill.
Once the logs are selected, they are put into position for precision rotary cutting into veneer sheets 1/36" thick
The veneer is hand selected at the mill, to meet the highest quality control standards
Every Collectors Series Drum Set starts with top quality North American
Maple or Birch, that is painstakingly hand selected from specially cut
single-log line production runs, producing sequential facial veneers. In
addition ,each log is chosen for the greatest amount of sapwood in order
to maximize yeild. Even the heartwood is used to make core shell plies.
In the end, almost every in of the log is used.
A typical wood hunt will take John Goode and professional log hunters
deep into the maple forests of Michigan's upper Peninsular.
These drums are absolutely superb to play, and as you have just read a
small taster of the work that the D.W. team put in the selection of the
timber. Jim Keltner who is one of my favourite drummers, has a D.W.
drumkit and the timber of which the kit was made is 750 years old.
Imagine the quality of sound when each drum is hit, Jim Keltner is one
of the worlds most in demand studio session drummers. he was also The
Beatles favourite drummer of choice. as he worked with all four members n
individualy George, Paul John and Ringo's solo albums.
