More new's on John Bonham, it is rumoured that when Led Zeppelin were recording at Jimmy Page's huge house in Hampshire. It was Jimmy's idea to record the drums on the middle floor of his three storey house.
There was to be no damping of the drumkit and the drums were set up on the Marble floor, with heavy weights to stop the bass drum moving.
There were Two microphones placed afew feet away from the drumkit and
also there was just a couple of mike's on the drumkit to pick up the
overheads, cymbals etc. The drum sound was huge, what you have been able to hear on many of Zeppelins records and it has been the sound that a lot
of record producers have sampled.
John Bonham had a very good sense of humour, as when he had just started out with Led Zeppelin they were at a recording studio cutting some
demos. The engineer of the session was trying to put some gaffer tape onto John's drums to get rid of the ringing sound on the drums, as John always had his drums tuned very high pitched. John told the engineer to
keep away from his beloved drumkit and to not put any tape on any thing an argument started between John and the engineer then the engineer said to the band that John was unrecordable.
When Led Zeppelin were awarded their first Gold disk, John sent it to
the engineer who he had fell out with with a message saying "Thanks for
the advise" John Henry Bonham.
